NCAT was established on 1 January 2014, consolidating the work of 22 previous tribunals and bodies, to become the State's one stop shop for specialist tribunal services.

"As a result of the formation of NCAT, instead of facing a bewildering array of tribunals, boards, and other bodies, there is one tribunal to go to, one telephone number to contact, and one website to visit" Justice Wright said.

"Some of that may sound trivial for lawyers, but for individuals who have no experience of the law, it is very significant."

In its first 12 months of operation, NCAT received more than 73,600 applications and conducted more than 92,000 hearings. In 2014 the NCAT website attracted more than 2.2 million views.
