NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT)

NCAT marks a successful first year

Announcement - 20 February 2015

The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) recently marked its first year as the state's super tribunal.

Established on 1 January last year, NCAT consolidated the work of 22 former tribunals to provide a one stop shop for specialist tribunal services in NSW, helping to resolve disputes quickly and in a cost effective manner.

NCAT deals with a broad and diverse range of matters, including consumer complaints and tenancy disputes, decisions on guardianship applications for people who are unable to make a decision, and reviews of administrative decisions made by Government agencies.

Key achievements in 2014

During its first year of operation, NCAT:

  • Received more than 73,600 applications with two thirds of all consumer and commercial disputes lodged online
  • Conducted more than 92,000 hearings in 78 locations around the state
  • Resolved over 70% of matters at, or prior to, first hearing
  • Received 2.2 million visits to the NCAT website.
